Administration should help USG restructuring efforts
The transition of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) into an advocacy body, the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) is taking too long and leaving students by the wayside. The article, "Students to vote on USG structure," Jan. 30, detailed a process that will involve two referendums, which students must approve, and could take until late March for any changes to take effect. This idea of restructuring has been on the table for more than a year. Efforts have been made to determine the best way to go about implementation and specifics, and that is an admirable effort, but in the meantime students are not being represented at all. There has been minimal action by USG to deal with real, pressing issues on campus, like discrimination, greek life, and the ultimate representation of the student body. While USG has been floundering, the president's tuition is being paid, and for what, we must ask. It is not enough to say students will benefit as a result of UPUA. It is time for the administration to step in and force these changes on a defunct and inefficient body. In the least, scholarship support must be suspended to USG administration officials until they do their jobs. Michael Patullo
