Winter season brings heavier scents

Collegian Staff Writer

It's time to ditch the fruity body sprays and plain old Axe for something more sensual and mature.

Whether they're designer creations or originals, heavier scents give students license to experiment during the winter.

A few popular women's perfumes are Euphoria by Calvin Klein, Fantasy by Britney Spears and Ralph Lauren's Romance for women. Coco, the original fragrance inspired by the designer Coco Chanel, has strong hints of sandalwood and Indian jasmine. Coco Mademoiselle is the younger interpretation of Coco, slightly lighter but just as provocative and perfect for a night out.

Victoria's Secret offers great fragrances for both women and men. Amber Hearn (sophomore-hotel and institutional management), a sales leader at Victoria's Secret, touts the store's products.

"We have the No. 1 fragrance in America, which is Dream Angels Heavenly," she said. Keynotes of this scent include white peony, white musk and sandalwoods. There is a whole Dream Angel's collection that includes Divine and Halo, but Heavenly is by far the most popular, Hearn said.

The Pink fragrance, part of the Pink line at Victoria's Secret, Hearn said, is very popular with young adults in their early 20s.

"My favorite is Victoria's Secret's Very Sexy. That's my scent," said Dirdre Rifenburgh (senior-kinesiology).

Suzanna Schamber (freshman-nutrition) said she often wears Victoria's Secret's body spray Love Spell and Estee Lauder's Pleasures. Because scents can go bad after an extended period of time and people often find themselves unable to stick to one, half-ounce bottles are the way to go.

"I like the little mini bottles," Rifenburgh said. "I never buy a full bottle."

Bath and Body Works carries a number of different lines for skincare, spa products and scents. Breathe is a Bath and Body Works beauty line that includes fragrances. Delight and Romance make up Breathe's light scents.

Brogan Byers (freshman-secondary math education) said she prefers Clinque scents.

"Well, right now I'm into Clinique Happy. I like to mix it up -- I have three or four that I rotate," Byers said. She also said she often uses perfume oils that she finds at incense stores.

"They stay on your skin a lot longer, and you only need a little bit," Byers said.

But incense stores aren't the only place to find perfume oils. Gap Scent Editions is a great way to create original fragrances. The 12 different perfume oils come in three categories -- romantic floral, exotic earth tones and crisp fruits -- with four scents each.

Men should also update their fragrance collection over the winter. This season, the most popular men's colognes are Giorgio Armani's Black Code and Acqua di Gio, Kenneth Cole's Black and Ralph Lauren's Polo Black.

On guys, Schamber said she likes Armani Mania, another Armani scent.

"It's like a really clean scent. It kind of smells like when you walk into Abercrombie," said Schamber. She said TAG and Axe are also nice, but Ralph Lauren's Romance for men "smells like good man."

Men can occasionally overdo it when it comes to applying fragrance.

"I wear Lacoste," Bill Cahill (junior-landscape contracting) said. As for applying, he said he sprays it into the air and walks into it, and sometimes applies it to his wrists.

It seems for the most part, however, that Penn State guys aren't too focused on how they smell for the ladies.

"I have Candies still. I haven't bought new cologne in a while," James Giovannitti (senior-accounting) said.
