Fans stick to superstitions as Super Bowl nears
Pittsburgh Steelers fans plan to hold true to their traditions for the Super Bowl to prevent from jinxing their team.

A Steeler's jersey: $100. A pair of Super Bowl tickets: $1,000. A chance to see the Pittsburgh Steelers win their first Super Bowl since 1980: priceless.

Most Steelers fans at Penn State have waited their whole lives to see Pittsburgh win a Super Bowl championship, and they are leaving little to chance. In the week leading up to the Super Bowl, superstitions are running high.

Brian Pflugh (senior-kinesiology) has an authentic Jack Lambert jersey that comes out only a few times a year Ã~ for the playoffs. "I only bring the jersey out on gameday during the playoffs; otherwise, it doesn't come out of my closet," Pflugh said. "If the Steelers don't make it to the playoffs, it will wait in the closet for another year."

Lambert, the Hall-of-Fame linebacker who played with the four-time Super Bowl championship Steelers from 1974 to 1984, is considered one of the greatest middle linebackers in NFL history. For Pflugh, he repesents the glory days of Steelers football. "When I wear that jersey, I'm trying to bring back all the greatness, bring back all those great Super Bowl moments," he said.

Frits Bigham (senior-secondary education) has a strict routine that he has used throughout the Steelers' playoff run this year. He has worn the same Heath Miller jersey over the same shirt for each game. Bigham has also received a lot of chain mail urging recipients to pass along the message, lest they jinx the Steelers into a loss. He said he has complied with each letter.

Wearing Steelers jerseys is one of several traditions fans have.

For Super Bowl Eve, he has a specific plan in mind. "I'll probably go to bed Saturday night in my jersey," he said.

Jim Tocci (sophomore-kinesiology) said he is still hoping to find Super Bowl tickets and make it to Detroit. If he is in State College come Sunday, he has a few superstitions up his sleeve to help the Steelers to victory.

Tocci has watched every playoff game in the same room with the same group of friends. With this superstition's record undefeated and the Steelers heading to the big game, he said they would continue that tradition.

Tocci also has a somewhat unusal trick that has proven lucky so far. "We have a little bag of raisins that we like to hold before the big plays," he said.

The first time Tocci and his friends had the bag, they noticed the Steelers performed particularly well. Ever since then, they have used the bag as a good luck charm during key game moments.

Jordan Hawk (junior-economics) has a more traditional superstition: the old-fashioned jinx. "If everyone talks us up, I'm afraid we won't do well," Hawk said.

Hawk, however, was less reserved when it came to talking about the Steelers' in-state rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles. "You gotta love when the Philly fans hate on us," Hawk said. "Now, it's like a shove in the face for them."
