A 23-year-old woman is in prison for allegedly stealing a Penn State student's car, driving drunk and smashing into a fire hydrant Sunday night.
According to court documents, Shannon Brubaker, of Duncansville, approached the student at MinitMart, 106 N. Atherton St., and asked for a ride to Altoona. The student refused, telling Brubaker it was too far. When Brubaker refused the offer of use of his cell phone, the student walked into the store.
The State College Police Department said Brubaker then hopped into the car, where the student had left his keys, and drove off. Police found her later at the scene of the crash in Ferguson Township, where the car had run off the road and into a fire hydrant at about 2:45 a.m. Water was shooting out of the hydrant, located on the 100 block of West Pine Grove Road.
According to court documents, Brubaker tried to run away when officers approached her at the crash scene. She "appeared to be extremely intoxicated" and needed help walking, police said.
State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro said Brubaker had been drinking at Players Nite Club, 112 W. College Ave., earlier that night. Before the incident where the student's car was stolen, Brubaker allegedly kicked and broke another car's taillight on the 100 block of South Allen Street.
Police cited Brubaker for criminal mischief and released her to a sober friend at about 2 a.m., Argiro said.
Less than one hour later, police were called again, this time for the theft of the student's car.
Brubaker is being held in Centre County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail. She is charged with theft, receiving stolen property, driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license.
Her preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 8 at Centre County Courthouse, Argiro said.
