More records tumble for PSU at weekend's National Open

Collegian Staff Writer

Disclaimer: this may sound like a report from a few weeks ago, but it's current -- the Penn State women's track and field team has broken records yet again.

Senior All-American Jennifer Leatherman broke her own school and facility records in the 20-pound weight throw, and sophomore Shana Cox surpassed her own Penn State mark in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.62 seconds this weekend at the Penn State National Open at the Multi-Sport Facility.

The Nittany Lions welcomed some elite competition, headlined by defending indoor national champion Tennessee and third-place Miami (Fla.). Olympic-level athletes, including former Lion standout Connie Moore, were also in attendance.

Penn State women's track and field coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said that the atmosphere would help her team in future events.

"You bring in the teams we brought in early in the season, you showcase some incredible talent, it's impressive," Alford-Sullivan said, holding a piece of freshman Meghan Noecker's birthday cake. "We were fighters."

Leatherman's first-place weight throw of 72-00.25 feet shattered her previous best of just over 70 feet, and she is showing no signs of letting up. She also finished second in the shot put.

"I was so glad we finally got somebody here to throw with," Leatherman said, referring to Virginia Tech junior Tamara Burns, who finished second in the weight throw. "It's pushing me, kind of a test to see how I respond to pressure."

The pressure may have been taxing at times, but Alford-Sullivan was happy with how the Lions handled it as a whole. Fifth-year senior Molly Landreth ran her first indoor event in almost two years, placing sixth with a personal record of 9:39.92 in the 3000-meter run against an extremely difficult field.

"I kinda just did what coach told me to do," Landreth said. "I probably would have preferred to open last week, but she's like, 'No, we're gonna open this week.' It's a little bit more pressure, but I love indoor. It's such a small track; it's like I'm running really fast."

Junior Kamilah Salaam also stepped up and had a busy weekend. She placed seventh in her first 200-meter dash of the season, 11th in the star-studded 60-meter dash, and she filled in unexpectedly for the 4X400-meter relay after sophomore Gayle Hunter injured her knee during the triple jump.

Salaam and teammates Cox, sophomore Dominque Blake and junior Briene Simmons placed third in the event behind Miami and Tennessee.

"I'm so tired," Salaam said. "But I'm doing OK."

Salaam said she was impressed by freshman Aleesha Barber, who set a personal best and placed third with 8.36 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Barber provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with the mark.

"Aleesha took advantage of a great start," Alford-Sullivan said. "She was the standout of the night."

Juniors Cheryl Green and Amber Strouse had productive weekends. Green placed fourth in the 500-meter dash, and Strouse took fourth in the pentathlon. Simmons also finished second in the 800-meter run For all the positives, Alford-Sullivan said the Lions made some mistakes but that she refuses to get upset about them.

"It's a two-sided coin. We made some massive statements. I know we can get better," Alford-Sullivan said.

Not even Leatherman is satisfied.

"By the Big Tens, I wanna throw 75," she said.
