Women's gymnastics falls to 3-3 with Big Ten loss

Collegian Staff Writer

After three weeks of competition and two meets against Big Ten foes, the No. 7 Penn State women's gymnastics team has found itself in a hole.

On their first road trip of the season, the Nittany Lions lost to No. 20 Minnesota, 194.175-193.5, putting their record at 3-3 and 0-2 in the Big Ten.

Each team was evenly matched throughout the meet, with the Lions winning the uneven bars and the floor exercise and Minnesota winning the vault and the balance beam. In the end, however, it was the Gophers who walked away with a victory.

Senior Lisa Clark won the floor exercise with a score of 9.775. Her win foiled Minnesota's Laura Johnson and her quest to win every event and the all-around. Clark also had the team's highest score on the vault, posting a 9.775

Freshman Katie Perrett tied Johnson in the uneven bars with a score of 9.775. It was her first event title victory. She also tied her career high on beam, posting a 9.675 and taking sixth place.

Senior Jennifer Orlando continues to be the most solid performer on the team, placing third in the all-around. Her consistency during the meets is holding the team together.

The beam has given the Lions some trouble this year, especially on Saturday. The score was well below the team average. All other scores were consistent to the performances of the season.

The Lions look to improve on their record and win their first meet next weekend. They will stay on the road and visit Arkansas before returning home for the last home meet of the season.
