Greeks make independents reluctant to help with Thon

I was appalled at Kate McGinley's declaration that greeks "run the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (Thon)," (Off-campus living not option for Panhellenic sororities, Jan. 25).

It seems that McGinley overlooked the thousands of non-greek Penn State students who contribute to Thon every year. True, the greek organizations have consistently raised the most money for Thon, but over 150 independent organizations -- from the Accounting Club to the Yoga and Meditation Society -- also work to benefit to help the kids. Non-greek students serve as captains and members of committees, and they go canning and write letters to their Thon children just like greek students do.

Most importantly, greek students and non-greek students are working for the good of the children and their families who are affected by pediatric cancer. McGinley's generalization that greek students "run" the event is one of the reasons why some Penn State students are reluctant to become involved in Thon at all, and it only further separates the greek community from the non-greek community.

One of the greatest aspects of Thon is the fact that it brings together all kinds of students from Penn State campuses for one great cause; it is unfortunate that some people fail to recognize that.
