'Courting Alex'
TV review

It's a saying that was being said long before any of us were here: opposites attract.

Thanks to stories like Cinderella, we've been made to believe that no difference is too great to come between true love.

Courting Alex, a new CBS sitcom, stars Jenna Elfman, whom you might remember as the quirky Dharma from another opposites-attract sitcom, ABC's Dharma and Greg.

Elfman plays Alex Rose, an ambitious lawyer working for her father and whose workaholic tendencies have led to a lackluster social life and very single existence.

Although her father Bill (Dabney Coleman) is proud of his successful, career-driven daughter, he's eager to see her settle down with one of her fellow colleagues, despite Alex's adamant refusals.

Enter Scott Larson (Josh Randall), a spontaneous stockbroker, turned firefighter, turned bar owner, whose good looks and charming personality have, despite Alex's obvious hesitance, turned the determined lawyer's eyes.

Now for the twist.

Alex's father is determined to buy out Scott's bar for the property, and sends Alex over to negotiate terms, oblivious to the chemistry brewing between the two.

After seeing Scott's determination to keep the bar which has been in his family for more than a hundred years, Alex seems to swoon and finally throws caution into the wind, ending the series opener on the back of a motorcycle en route to Coney Island.

It's easy to see the budding relationship between Alex and Scott will soon face the wrath of Alex's father, not to mention the clash of their very different personalities.

Although the show lacked originality, it's back and forth humor did make for a good chuckle.

Elfman did a good job making me forget that she once played a yoga-loving bohemian and despite its corny moments, I was fairly amused by the father-daughter relationship and banter between Bill and Alex.

Although I thought the show did what it needed to do, I don't know if America's interested in watching another ill-fated romance sitcom.

I guess the jury's still out.
