NEWS

More than 300 students packed into Ballroom C of the Nittany Lion Inn last night, even if it meant they had to sit on the floor in a corner or stand in the back by the door.

Running the Boston Marathon's 26.2 miles might not seem like a walk in the park to most people, but for a group of Penn State volunteers, it's a way of helping community members without medical insurance.

In addition to many previously announced changes, more modifications to the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) have just been released, affecting the nearly 500,000 graduate school applicants who take the test annually.

Project Haiti, a group that goes to Haiti every spring break to help poor Haitians, is changing its plans this year because of political chaos in the country.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich recently proposed giving a tax credit of up to $1,000 in tuition money for the families of college students in his state, and some are wondering if this would be a practical solution to high tuition costs in Pennsylvania.

Homeless man held on theft charges

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is suffering from a lack of participation after the university cut 92 percent of the organization's scholarship money last year.

A Bellefonte man who police say was trading more than 1,500 images of child pornography on his computer had his preliminary hearing continued at the Centre County Courthouse yesterday.

The Pennsylvania chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) received a written response last week from Penn State after the organization requested Joe Paterno's resignation.

Penn State President Graham Spanier sought out and submitted all instances of student complaints of bias in the classroom over the past five years, upon the request of state Rep. Tom Stevenson's, R-Allegheny. The complaints totaled 13, and all were resolved.

Beginning Jan. 31, new federal housing requirements will make it more difficult for full-time college students to qualify for subsidized housing.

SPORTS

Freshman Sandy takes player of week honors

The Penn State men's basketball team was thoroughly lambasted last night in a 72-43 thrashing at the hands of No. 21 Wisconsin. With a game at No. 12 Michigan State on Saturday, the Nittany Lions (10-7, 2-4 Big Ten) might want to make themselves comfortable in the proverbial woodshed.

After living out of their suitcases for most of January, the Penn State Lady Lions are finally returning home.

For Kamela Gissendanner, her tenure at Penn State has been a struggle between great strides in some instances and going nowhere in others. Yet through her perseverance, she has become the Lady Lions' most reliable scorer.

Early stages of a team's season are almost always a cause for seeing the glass as half full, and the Penn State women's tennis team currently has no shortage of optimism.

In sports, it is extremely unusual that a style of play is described by mentioning the athlete's last name. In basketball, something is Jordan-esque, and it's Gretzky-like in hockey. And on the No. 10 Penn State wrestling team, there is the "Strayer match."

A pretty-in-pink princess, a quintessential high school jock, an eccentric freak, a shy nerd and a flannel-loving bully are five cliché adolescent characters trapped in Saturday detention in No Refund Theatre's(NRT) production, The Breakfast Club.

Many former boy-band devotees remember Ashley Parker Angel as the blond, short-haired member of the pop group O-Town, who won the hearts of teenyboppers all over the country.

Once in a while you come across a film that, despite its context, contains a message that will continue to ring true with viewers over the years.

With spring break almost a month away, many Penn State students are migrating to the gym. Instead of lacing up old sneakers and throwing on baggy sweats to cover unwanted winter insulation, try these suggestions to stay fab while getting fit.

Penn State art students will showcase their work in the School of Visual Arts Undergraduate Juried Exhibition through February 9 at the Zoller Gallery.

It's all in the cards.

As Penn State students move off campus and into apartment complexes around State College, it becomes necessary for them to begin to cook their own meals.

The Grammy Award-winning Maria Schneider Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Eisenhower Auditorium.
