Homeless man held on theft charges
A homeless man who was allegedly caught stealing a tub of cottage cheese and a glazed doughnut from the University Creamery on Jan. 11 and 12 is being held in Centre County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Rudolph Tomedi, 57, has a prior record of retail theft in Pennsylvania, according to the criminal complaint. State law stipulates that after the first two thefts, subsequent offenses become felony charges, Penn State University Police Officer Don Hazel said.
"It seems like such insignificance, cottage cheese and a doughnut," Hazel said. "But it's because of his past history in the state of Pennsylvania."
Tomedi is charged with one count of retail theft and one count of receiving stolen property. Tomedi could serve up to five years in prison for each count, Hazel said.
Police search student's room for drugs
A Penn State freshman who was allegedly caught with marijuana in his Geary Hall dorm room yesterday faces three drug-related charges.
Penn State University Police questioned David Giblin, 18, of Philadelphia, after someone smelled burning marijuana coming from his room. Upon searching his room, police found 135 small baggies of marijuana and $145 in a cigar box hidden in a light fixture, according to court documents.
Giblin is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 1.
