Greeks exhibit poor behavior similar to rest of students

No news is good news. At least when I was a greek at Penn State, that always seemed to be the case. These last few weeks just confirmed what I was thinking. The reason this is so true? Well, the fact is that anything good involving greeks, except for the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (Thon) is often overlooked by non-greek members of the Penn State student population.

Countless fraternities and sororities sponsor philanthropic events to raise money for charities. They are heavily invested in Thon, helping make it a success every year. They offer their members the opportunity to learn to be leaders among their peers. I cannot even begin to convey my gratitude for having had the chance to serve as vice president of my house. It has paid dividends for me in the real world.

Are there greeks who act shamelessly and bring bad publicity to their respective fraternity or sorority's name? Yes. Are there greeks who consistently fail to live up to the standards that Penn State demands of its students? Yes. But anyone who is narrow-minded enough to believe that any one house or any one greek represents the views, opinions and behavioral tendencies of the entire greek system is only perpetuating an atmosphere of stereotyping and false assumptions. Truth is, I guarantee you that the proportion of misbehaving greeks to well-behaving greeks isn't much different than the proportion of misbehaving undergraduates to well-behaving undergraduates.
