University needs to expand wireless network on campus
I would like to applaud the State College Borough for its forethought on the issue of a wireless network ("Borough wants to provide wireless access across town," Jan. 23). Unfortunately I have to use this as an example of the inadequacy of Penn State's Information Technology Services (ITS). We are behind other universities by not having an integrated wireless network. What are we paying an information technology fee for? To print 110 pages in the computer lab and not be able to use a stapler? The system is structured in such a way that each individual department is responsible for installing its own wireless access point and deciding how users access it. That is like putting each department in charge of maintaining the road to and from their building. ITS needs to step up and do this for Penn State one way or another. If a pay system is installed before we can put our own campus-wide wireless system in place, it will be a black eye for Penn State. With all of the resources at our disposal, how can the administration fail the students on such an important task? Brian Borawski
