NEWS

At least three Pennsylvania universities have recently come under fire for shoddy campus crime-reporting practices, but officials say students shouldn't worry about the numbers at Penn State.

Penn State students who wish to quit smoking may find the task more difficult this year due to the recent 25 percent reduction in funding for Pennsylvania's tobacco prevention and cessation programs for 2006.

Politicians, like rock stars, took the mic and tried to shine last night.

Judge arraigns local man for assault

The Penn State Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. today in the boardroom of the Nittany Lion Inn, 200 W. Park Ave., to discuss the Dickinson's School of Law dual-campus plan and the future of a graduate housing complex. The meeting is open to the public.

Blogging has moved college professors' frustration with their students beyond water cooler conversation and onto the World Wide Web.

Record attendance at this week's Martin Luther King Jr. Day events may boost the likelihood that students will have the day off again next year, university officials say.

Adam Greiss swiped a Red Hot from the piles of brightly-colored candy lining the tables during dancer registration for this year's Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

Imagine meeting a group of strangers and calling them your sisters. For two Penn State sororities, this was just the case.

The university registrar lists close to 5,000 University Park students enrolled in online classes, and according to a Sloan Consortium study, overall online course enrollment at higher education institutions nationwide is on the rise.

SPORTS

The Penn State women's gymnastics team begins each home meet by kissing the Nittany Lion at the shrine for good luck.

Consider this weekend's women's track and field meet a fancy practice.

The first three points scored in Game 1 of Wednesday night's match effectively set the tone for the rest of the contest.

Weimer, Gray invited to try out for U-21 squad

The Penn State men's gymnastics team's season so far can easily be described by three S's: sloppy, struggle and Sandy.

In every team's season, there is a series that has the potential to elevate the team to a whole new level. For the No. 12 Penn State Lady Icers, that series is this weekend.

After winning its final home meet of the season, the Penn State men's swimming and diving team hopes to continue moving forward as it takes on a Big East foe this weekend.

You could call it the play of the game.

When Purdue's junior guard Katie Gearlds momentarily came out of the game with five minutes to go in the first half, she left trailing Penn State by one, all by herself, having recorded 14 points.

The roles have switched, with the Lady Lions' season tipping over the cliff while another team used to falling straight into the valley pulls itself back to safety.

Forget about playing the No. 19 team in the country, forget about early January's 35-point defeat at the hands of that same squad -- forward Jamelle Cornley refuses to call his Nittany Lions the underdog vs. Ohio State.

Earlier this week, Icers head coach Joe Battista sought to dispel any thoughts his players may have had about taking this weekend's unranked opponent lightly.

ARTS

Bluegrass, folk and blues will come to State College tonight when the "Acoustic Duo of Destruction," Herb and Hanson, play at Otto's Pub and Brewery, 2105 N. Atherton St.

In spite of the current overcast weather, a taste of spring can be found in the new art exhibit on display at the HUB-Robeson Center.

Warning: if you choose to see the movie Hostel this weekend do not purchase the $10 popcorn and soda at the concession stand before the movie starts. You will lose your appetite.

The tagline goes "before Romeo & Juliet there was..." -- this is where you put in the title Tristan & Isolde. Maybe director Kevin Reynolds should have mentioned in the tagline that the movie was not just a romantic epic, but also a movie that guys could get into.

A few television shows aren't known by their title at all, but are known instead by a phrase that sums up the weirdest thing about it.

It might be killing him, but whatever Pete Doherty was taking when he made Down in Albion -- the first album from his post-Libertines crew Babyshambles -- is doing wonders for his music.

In Last Holiday, Georgia Byrd, played by Queen Latifah, is a frumpy sales clerk whose life is turned upside down after a she discovers she has a rare disease and has three weeks left to live.

You can dance, for inspiration! Or not.
