"We wanted bands we could bring that you might not know of, but you would appreciate if you got to see," Greene said. "There are also fantastic local groups that might make you say, 'Wow, I didn't know we had such good local bands.' The key word is exposure."
Jesse Gallagher, who sings and plays keyboard and bass for Apollo Sunshine, said the band's wide range of influences, including "old rock 'n' roll, classical and jazz," make the group's sound hard to pin down.
"That's what good about making music," Gallagher said. "You get to play and don't have to classify it."
Greene said Apollo Sunshine's sound is "a mix of real good pop sing-a-long songs with more experimental [elements]."
"[Apollo Sunshine] was the first concert I saw at Penn State," Greene said. "My socks were thoroughly rocked off."
Gallagher also said the show will be the band's first as a trio after the departure of its guitarist.
"[We'll] change the arrangements a little bit," Gallagher said.
Gallagher also said there would be some other modifications to the group's sound.
"We're starting to use a turntable," he said. "That's new."
Johnny Action Figure guitarist Chris Sheehan (junior-film and video) said his band is excited to be playing with Apollo Sunshine.
"I saw them at the Crowbar last year, and they blew me away," Sheehan said. "I jumped at the chance to open for them."
Johnny Action Figure, based in Reading, has also played at local events such as Movin' On and Roustabout!, Sheehan said.
"We're fortunate to have something of a following at PSU," Sheehan said. Sheehan called the group's sound alternative/indie rock, with other influences such as Elvis Costello and Tom Petty.
The group is looking to promote the upcoming spring release of its new EP, Johnny Action Figure Asks the Room to Please Stop Spinning.
The show will also feature Minor White, who previously played at SOMA Synthesis, a combination music and film event.
"We had a lot of fun at the SOMA Synthesis and thought it went great," said Kyle Wall (freshman-marketing), guitar and keyboard player for Minor White.
"We have been listening to some of Apollo Sunshine's newer stuff, and we are really into it," Wall said. "Their song arrangements are very interesting, and we especially like the aspect of noise in the music."
SOMA will also host a table at the club fair in the HUB-Robeson Center today with information on the Apollo Sunshine show and the club in general.
