FedEx Orange Bowl champs deserve separate ceremony
This year has long been hailed as the year Penn State regained its storied name and took it into the future -- beyond Michael Robinson's tumultuous five years, beyond Joe Paterno's retirement and into the hands of our young freshmen receivers ("Thrilling win over FSU a fitting end to season," Jan. 9). Why then was the centerpiece of Penn State athletics relegated to celebrating the FedEx Orange Bowl victory on campus during the halftime of the men's basketball game this past Saturday? No offense to Penn State men's basketball coach Ed DeChellis or the Penn State basketball program, but to not have a separate event for this outstanding season is a slap in the face to our football team. Maybe it would be more understandable if the school made more of an effort to publicize the events taking place during halftime of the Iowa game, but I only found out about the event hours before the game, and I regularly check on athletic updates at Penn State. I understand there are politics in making all the sports fairly equal on campus, but there has to be an exception when we are talking about Penn State football making such a comeback the way it did this year. The fact that the administration scheduled the celebration during a paid event rather than an open event shocks me. Something separate would have really put a beautiful cap to the beginning of a new era in Penn State football. James DiGiuseppe
