Student presence important during confirmation protests
I think it is wonderful that students are participating in the protest of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito ("Alliance protests support of Alito," Jan. 17). It is the vibrancy of student protests that has the ability to change things. Witness the effect of the Kent State University protest in the ultimate end of the Vietnam War. I am not suggesting that I like a violent kind of confrontation; Basically, I do not want to see anybody get hurt. I believe in the right to privacy and a woman's right to choose. However, this was not the point of my letter; it was in support of the right to protest. One of the things I learned in law school when I studied under the late Donald J. Farage, former Dickinson School of Law professor and president of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, was that it is not unusual for Supreme Court justices to change their political orientations. Let's just wait and see. It appears that Alito will be confirmed, and perhaps his conservative orientation will change. Mark B. Hammond
