Penn State sports take 2nd in Directors' Cup
With five teams earning points after each finishing ninth or higher this past fall, Penn State is second overall in the final fall standings of the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings with 308.5 points. The Lions are poised for their 13th straight top 25 finish in the Cup's 13-year history. The Lions have finished in the top 10 seven times, and the top five a total of four times. With a pair of third place finishes, football and women's soccer led the way in Penn State's point total.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 men's and 10 women's. Each NCAA champion receives 100 points, while second place is worth 90, third is worth 85 (83 points for a tie) and so forth.
Capturing its second Big Ten Championship since joining the league in 1993, Penn State's football team used a 31-22 victory at Michigan State to bring home the University's unprecedented fifth fall Big Ten Championship. Previous to Penn State's success this fall, no single member institution had won more than three of the fall Big Ten titles up for grabs, which include: men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball. With the fall behind them, the Nittany Lions have already won more Big Ten titles than any other year since joining the conference in 1992.
