Comments made by NOW not reflective of all women
I have had it with the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) ("Women's group wants Paterno to resign," Jan. 9). Just because the members call themselves the National Organization for Women doesn't mean they represent all women. They also have no right to ask for anyone to resign, based on comments they made. With respect to the comments Coach Joe Paterno made about Florida State linebacker A.J. Nicholson being accused of a sexual assault: "There's some tough -- there's so many people gravitating to these kids. He may not have even known what he was getting into, Nicholson. They knock on the door; somebody may knock on the door; a cute girl knocks on the door. What do you do?" The key word is may, and it must have been lost in translation. Paterno was being nice and not accusatory by offering another possibility. Like false charges of sexual assault against athletes or stars never happen. Whatever happened to the rule, "I do not have to agree with what you say, but I agree to your right to say it." NOW may think Paterno's comments are insensitive but I don't believe they were; they were very sensitive toward the accused. This is the United States: One is innocent until proven guilty. NOW needs to stop censoring others when comments are made with which it does not agree. John Bloom
