McBride sings classics at BJC

Collegian Staff Writer

A respectable amount of the audience was seated at the Bryce Jordan Center when the casually dressed Warren Brothers took the stage last Friday night, opening what was the first stop on Martina McBride's Timeless tour.

Brett and Brad Warren, stars of the Country Music Television reality show Barely Famous, delivered a humorous and entertaining five-song set in front of rich, red curtains.

Their particular version of rock/country lent itself well to catchy and comical lyrics.

One song, "Sell a lot of Beer," the brothers poked fun at themselves for being the ultimate bar band with lyrics like "Might not sell a lot of records, but I sure sell a lot of beer."

The duo's guitar skills were showcased during another, more classic country song titled "Blank Sheet of Paper," which appears on Tim McGraw's album Live Like You Were Dying.

The pair definitely proved themselves as high-quality entertainers, but the older BJC crowd only seemed moderately impressed.

While McBride was preparing to begin, black and white clips of country music's predecessors were shown over the big screens, setting the mood.

The plush curtains opened and revealed a set that mimicked that of The Grand Ole Opry, with McBride in a classy yellow dress. The next hour consisted of McBride performing songs from her recently released album Timeless, where she covers country songs from the past.

This hour seemed more like a crash course in old-school country music than a concert. Taking into consideration that her new album is what she is on the tour to promote, it is understandable that McBride would play her new versions of old songs. However, her set might have been more entertaining if she would have mixed both the songs from Timeless and her previous hits.

This sixty-minute block of country music time-travel seemed less than impressive for both younger and older fans. But that didn't stop McBride's amazing voice from resonating through the BJC in tribute to her predecessors.

Although only few may have been able to appreciate the "classic" country songs that kicked off the evening, many more hopefully recognized the incredible talent Martina McBride delivers no matter what she may be singing.
