Crazy crowd roars with Lions

Collegian Staff Writer

An hour after No. 8 Penn State rocked the college football universe with its 17-10 victory over Ohio State, Nittany Lions fans were still rocking Happy Valley.

The 109,839 fans who packed Beaver Stadium literally made the structure shake, and the long-suffering Nittany Nation was not ready to let the night end.

"The crowd is everything, man, that's our 12th man," defensive end Matthew Rice said as the roar of fans echoed throughout the belly of the stadium.

"It was awesome -- 12th man. They were like the 12th and 13th man," defensive tackle Scott Paxson said, doing Rice one better.

"The crowd was definitely the 12th, the 13th, the 14th, the 15th man," safety Calvin Lowry said, taking his praise to a whole other level. "They were there for us. I give this victory to them. They have been out there since Sunday supporting us."

Those who had been out there since Oct. 2, the proud denizens of Paternoville, waited for their chance to be heard. They got what they wanted on Saturday night.

"The crowd was unbelievable. I can't even describe it," Dan Connor said . "Not to sound corny, but the atmosphere of this game, I've never felt anything like it, my heart was almost stopping I was so excited to just play for these fans. In their tents all week, it's raining out, but they stay there so they can get good seats. This university is unbelievable."

The student section was almost completely filled with crazies either clad or painted in white for the university-declared "White Out" with almost an hour to go before kickoff. It made its presence felt on what may have been the definitive defensive series in the contest.

Ohio State took the field with the ball on its 20-yard line and the bass of "Zombie Nation" pulsing. The student section and much of the rest of the stadium started to bounce, and Tamba Hali and Rice sacked Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith for a 6-yard loss.

Second down. Same song. Same bounce. Incomplete pass.

Third down. Same song. Same bounce. Calvin Lowry interception returned to the Ohio State 2-yard line.

"You can feel the tingles going up your spine," Lowry said of the crowd.
