NOW efforts better directed at pressing women's issues
I find it appalling that the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) would focus more on what Joe Paterno said in response to Florida State linebacker A.J. Nicholson's alleged sexual assault charges than the act itself ("Women's group wants Paterno to resign," Jan. 9). Instead of focusing on what a standup man said, NOW should focus on condemning the allegations of sexual assault. If Paterno had called Nicholson a rapist we'd see other headlines. Instead he tried to be more politically correct about the situation and now everyone is jumping down his throat for his comments. Why doesn't NOW seem to care that Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden only dismissed Nicholson from team for "breaking a team rule?" Is that what sexual assault is? A team rule? Actually, Bowden was referring to Nicholson breaking curfew; he didn't even punish him for the sexual assault aspect of the issue. He is the one who made light of the situation, not Paterno. Maybe NOW should redirect its anger or better yet, use its voice for something positive such as supporting the rights of women in government and businesses. Fight for equal opportunities, equal wages and equal power. Don't fight because someone made a comment you didn't approve of, especially when that comment does not hold back women. Carla Scardino
