McBride back in State College for BJC's 10-year anniversary

Collegian Staff Writer

Country music star Martina McBride will kick off her national Timeless tour tomorrow on the night that the show's venue, the Bryce Jordan Center, begins its 10th anniversary celebration.

McBride will be joined by opening act, country music duo the Warren Brothers.

Since opening in January 1996, the BJC has been the home to numerous artists, such as Dave Matthews Band, Aerosmith, Bruce Springstein and Sting.

To celebrate its 10th year in operation, a video montage of past performers will be played during all the basketball games this season, director of public relations at the BJC, Bernie Punt said.

Details: Tickets are $27.50 for students and $44.50 for the general public

Taking advantage of all the country acts going on tour recently, Punt said he is happy to have McBride -- who performed at the venue in 2000 -- return this winter.

"It's always exciting when an artist starts their tour here," Punt said. "[McBride is] a true professional and truly one of the gifted voices in the industry."

Punt said he expects a big show since students have returned from break and sales have reached almost 5,000 seats. Students who purchase tickets for the concert will receive a discount with their Penn State student IDs.

"We try to do discounts for every show, and Martina's agent knows that college students have less funds," Punt said.

McBride is back on the road to showcase songs from her new album Timeless, which was released in October 2005. The album went platinum less than eight weeks after its release and became McBride's ninth platinum record.

Unlike McBride's previous albums, Timeless is a collection of covers -- not original songs -- of country classics from the likes of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Patsy Cline.

"These are songs she sang in her family band and grew up listening to," Kathy Best, McBride's publicist, said. "She's very excited about this new album and introducing these old songs to her younger audience."

Before the show, local radio station Froggy 98 (98.1) will be broadcasting outside of the BJC and has already given out free tickets to some lucky McBride fans.

"She's very liked in this area," Donna Dunkel, program director for Froggy 98, said. Dunkel also said the first single on Timeless, "Rose Garden," a cover of Lynn Anderson's 1970 hit, is in full rotation on the station.

The Warren Brothers, who were recently added to tomorrow night's lineup, are a quirky and fun act, and their performance should be the same, Dunkel said.

The brothers are also making their second appearance in State College since opening for Tim McGraw in 2004.

With five Country Music Award nominations in 2005, this duo has written songs for artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Faith Hill and is the focus of the Country Music Television reality show Barely Famous.
