Delta Sigma: PSU should advocate harsher punishment

Imagine how easy life would be if every time you were convicted of a crime, you could simply change your name and get a clean slate.

For Delta Sigma fraternity members, life is just that simple.

After countless citations for alcohol-related incidents in recent years, the fraternity was convicted of hazing by the Penn State Fraternity and Sorority Life Review Board in December. After the conviction, Penn State made the decision to disband the fraternity. Its members were also forced to move out of the house and prevented from participating in university-affiliated events as an organization.

While the university's actions may seem tough, the fraternity has a plan to circumvent the bulk of this punishment -- apply for membership as a chapter of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, which they were affiliated with in the 1990s, and operate as a national rather than a Penn State fraternity.

Such a move, which could very well be complete by the beginning of next fall, could potentially allow current Delta Sigma members to remain together as a group as well as allow the illegal behaviors, for which they have made themselves infamous, to continue.

Given this standard, any group can conceivably cause harm to a potential member and then, upon conviction, change its name and walk away without any long-term repercussions. Is that the type of behavior institutions want to promote to the public?

Don't their actions suggest they are making a mockery of a fraternity system that is supposed to be characterized as honorable?

While Penn State did what it could to punish the students involved, its actions should not end now that they have vacated their house and cannot participate in events such as the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon as a group.

If Penn State officials care at all about serving justice, it is incumbent upon them to communicate with national officials for Delta Sigma Phi to ensure that the current members of Delta Sigma fraternity are not recognized by their organization as an official chapter.
