Following celebrities' lives wastes public's time, energy

Why do we get ourselves so emotionally caught up in the lives of celebrities? We worried about Jennifer Aniston and her feelings about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Women were bummed out when Orlando Bloom and Kate Bosworth got back together. When it comes down to it, who really cares about Britney Spears' baby or that Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have separated? I had a whole conversation the other day regarding Brad, Jen and Angelina. It occurred to me later that I knew more about the lives of these celebrities than I originally thought. This information is thrown at us from every direction. All I have to do is run into the grocery store and I am updated on the latest "news."

I've thought about the roles that celebrities play in pop culture more than once, wondering what it is that bothers me so. I bought People magazine yesterday and read through it last night. It had a three-page spread on Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and their baby.

When I saw the magazine this morning, I realized it was ridiculous to spend $3 on it. Furthermore, it is absurd that people get their panties all bunched up over what is going on in people's lives that really have nothing to with them. Why do we allow our emotions to be riled by these celebrities we have never met and who have no real effect on our lives? We spend our time, energy, money and emotions on these frivolous things. Instead, we should be concerned with real things that are in our lives.

I think we should take a serious look at ourselves and decide if we are being the best people we can be when we allow the lives of celebrities to have a substantial effect on our emotions and priorities.
