Lions will lock down as Orange Bowl approaches
Orange Bowl 2006

Collegian Staff Writer

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The 2005 Orange Bowl has been pre-classified as a dinosaur duel, a fight between two legends towards the end of their careers.

“I was thinking this morning, I am exhibition B. Joe [Paterno] is exhibition A,” Florida State's Bobby Bowden, one of two Tyrannosauric coaches, said. “There's a game in there somewhere, Penn State and Florida State are playing the game.”

The questions were general and the tone was light as Nittany Lions football coach Joe Paterno and Florida State coach Bobby Bowden addressed the media Thursday morning to preview the week's festivities. Paterno and his team arrived in south Florida on Dec. 20 for the bowl game on Jan. 3, which is the longest span of time a Paterno-coached team has been at a bowl site to prepare, according to the coach.

“We have not practiced well the last two days,” Paterno said.

After two consecutive days of two-a-day practicing in Delray Beach, Fla., the Lions took up residence on Christmas Eve in Bal Harbor, Fla., where they will be for the duration of their winter vacation.

Paterno said his team still “looks tired” after the last two practice days.

“We've been practicing in the middle of the day, and it's been a little hotter [at the Barry University practice facilities] than it's been in Delray,” he said. “I'm hoping we'll have a little more bounce than we've had in the past two days.”

Questions remain regarding the status of Penn State wide receiver Derrick Williams. Nittany Lions football coach Joe Paterno said Williams “wants to play.”

“There's no question Derrick Williams is worth a touchdown,” Paterno said. “But, the doctors are concerned. I don't think it's worth the kid's future. He's got a great future, so I'll doubt it he'll play.”

Williams suffered a broken arm during the Lions' only loss this season in Ann Arbor, MI., against Michigan, and he has been conditioning with the team in an attempt to return.

Certainly, it's not uncommon to hear a septuagenarian native of New York complaining about the weather in this part of the country, and Paterno said that instead of blaming the heat for poor practices, he was going to reevaluate the team's practice and social schedule.

“We haven't had a curfew for five days. We're going to start to tie them down a little bit,” Paterno said. “I feel good about the team, I just don't think I've done a good job.”

Florida State arrived in south Florida Wednesday, and Bowden said he planned to go without pads for his team's first day of practice this week, which took place Thursday afternoon.

Bowden cited injury problems to his team's offense line as one of the reasons many in Tallahassee were upset with the Seminoles' (8-4, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) win-loss record.

“We have lacked consistency,” Bowden said. “[ESPN analyst and former college football coach] Lou Holtz once said, ‘If you got a flat tire, you've got to fix the flat tire.' What am I going to do, fire the driver? Ain't gonna happen. If I have a problem, let's fix it. We're smart enough to fix it. I think we are.”
