ESPN weighed in on the ongoing war of words between Jen Harris and Rene Portland -- the latest step in a publicity war between the former Penn State women's basketball player and her former head coach.
On an episode of "Outside The Lines" that aired Sunday at 9:30 a.m., former Lady Lion Cindy Davies said she dated a female team manager while a member of the Lady Lions in the early 1980s.
"It hurts, it still hurts 25 years later, to even mention the name Rene Portland, or read the name, or see the team playing on TV," Davies said on the broadcast, according to a transcript of the report courtesy of "Outside The Lines" producer Nicole K. Noren. "I get very emotional. When I hear about kids over the years, who had been let go from the team, or left for academic reasons? I know what it means. I've been there."
The transcript also quoted Davies as saying she panicked and told Portland that she would rather quit and concentrate on academics after being confronted by Portland and a graduate assistant, Liz McGovern, during Davies' sophomore year. Davies' explanation to Portland and the graduate assistant was the only story picked up by the media at the time.
Harris, who has said she is not a lesbian to The Daily Collegian, repeated herself on the television report, according to the report transcript.
Penn State assistant sports information director Erin Whiteside said the two prior press releases sent to the media from Rene Portland accurately portrayed Portland's viewpoints on the matter.
Penn State spokesman Tysen Kendig said there would be no additional comment from the university regarding Harris' allegations at this time.
ESPN will re-air a slightly shortened version of the report at 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday; at 7:40 a.m. on Wednesday on ESPN2; and, at 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday on ESPN, Noren said.
