Thankfully for the world at large, Jim Shelby and his understanding of professional accountability is far from the truth ("Target has obligation to fill prescriptions," Dec. 8).
Pharmacists, like most professionals, are not bound by policy to perform any duty that conflicts with their moral view of the world. Just as a doctor can decline to prescribe birth control pills or perform an abortion (they would likely recommend someone who might), a pharmacist can refuse to fill a prescription.
Ethics and morals are not policy driven, and as such, cannot be bound by policy that changes that can change daily.
