NEWS

The dorm room is a home away from home for Penn State students preparing for the holidays, but decorating must be done under campus and national regulations.

State College Borough Council unanimously accepted the final draft of a market study last night that calls for major revitalization of an area west of Atherton Street.

About 500 people attended the first day of a two-day-long summit at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel to discuss the role of higher education in Pennsylvania's economic development and Pennsylvania's "brain drain."

A bill that would eliminate $14.3 billion in federal student loan funding is scheduled for a vote later this month, and Penn State students could lose loan opportunities if the bill is passed.

Student charged with criminal trespass

The parents of a Penn State student who died in a house fire last spring are suing the property's landlords and real estate management corporation for the wrongful death of their son, Christopher Raspanti.

Local tanning salon owner Ronald Hanslovan, accused of spying on undressed customers, pleaded no contest yesterday to a third-degree misdemeanor charge of invasion of privacy and will be under probation for one year.

Robert Pangborn has been named Penn State's new vice president and dean of undergraduate education, filling a two-month vacancy in the position.

Penn State students will go for broke, some literally, when they pack their suitcases and migrate south for the Nittany Lions' first-ever Bowl Championship Series game.

Luke Miller said he's learned a lot by ringing a bell next to the giant kettle at College Avenue and Allen Street.

Though the embers have cooled on the 3-1 loss to Creighton that ended the Penn State men's soccer team's season Nov. 27 at Jeffrey Field, the fire is not out completely. And if you blow enough oxygen on it, you inevitably get some sparks.

The days of relying on a single No. 1 line are over.

ARTS

It was an older, better-dressed crowd at the Gladys Knight/Andy Kim concert last night than can sometimes be found occupying the Bryce Jordan Center. But looks can be deceiving: When the music hit, suits or no, things got a little rowdy.

Three months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Penn State students organized a benefit concert to remind State College that those affected by the storm still need help.

All American Rathskeller, 108 S. Pugh St., will feature $2 Blue Moon pints and happy hour to 10 to midnight (237-3858).

SCIHEALTH

Newspaper readers are declining, and young adult readers are leading the downward charge. But hope -- and the right demographics -- for print media can be found online, according to experts.

Although the apocalypse may not be near, some say that time is ticking for climate change. Others leave global warming on the back burner and ride on what others consider a natural climate cycle.

Researchers at Penn State have flipped the switch -- the molecular switch.
