Delta Sigma's actions not truly 'for the kids'
After reading about the shutdown of the Delta Sigma fraternity, I knew it would only be a short matter of time before one of its members came forth with a statement as to why its termination was unjust ("Delta Sigma banning hurts Thon children," Dec. 2). But to use the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon as the sole reason the fraternity would like to exist is laughable. For a moment, let us set aside the possible incident(s) that caused this punishment, which by all accounts must be quite substantial. Instead, consider what Mike O'Brien is pinning on the university. He plainly states that Penn State is "forbidding us to help raise money for kids with cancer." What? You and your brothers can raise money for kids with cancer (or any other worthwhile cause) any day of the week. No one can stop you from being charitable. But then again, why would you want to help others if you don't get to participate in Thon? Is Thon the "end all, be all" of charitable events? Why don't you simply take the money you have already raised and walk up to any hospital or reputable agency and donate it on the spot? True, you won't get the media attention or the cool little T-shirts you can wear to class on Monday, but you will be doing a truly good thing -- helping others in need, without the fanfare. So don't use "the kids" as a reason to continue having your beer-swilling marathons and self-indulgent events. If it is truly "about the kids," you will find a way to help. If you want to help the kids, O'Brien, help the kids. But stop blaming the school for your organization's bad behavior. Michael Bricker
