Thon deserves apology from banned fraternity
CORRECTION:
Mr. Yurasko's name was misspelled.
Corrected On: 6/28/2006 @ 5:22 pm. In a letter to the editor, Mike O'Brien argues that "Penn State isn't 'for the kids'" because his fraternity was banned by the university and thus can no longer participate in the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon ("Delta Sigma banning hurts Thon children," Dec. 2). Perhaps if the Delta Sigma members behaved better, the university would still recognize their chapter and they could continue their Thon activities. Philanthropic participation does not excuse bad behavior. Being responsible and noble is an everyday thing and not merely reserved for a few autumn Saturdays standing on the side of the road or a long February weekend in Rec Hall. The university thinks the members of Delta Sigma chose to ignore that fact and it has acted accordingly. O'Brien's blaming of the university is inappropriate and shameless. Are arguments like O'Brien's fair to Thon volunteers who put so much effort into the charity and are good citizens everyday? Too many times over the years some members of the greek community have suggested that they be excused from their misbehavior because of Thon participation. While it would be unfair to suggest that is any more than a small minority of greeks, it has happened. It appears as though O'Brien can be added to that list. I hope O'Brien reconsiders his position and apologizes to the university for his letter. Perhaps the entire fraternity should apologize to Thon for not being able to participate because it could not stay out of trouble. William F. Yurasko
