USG to make PSU values list
The executive branch wants to work with student leaders to outline values that should be followed to hold campus organizations accountable.

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) executive branch wants student leaders to make a list of Penn State values and establish ramifications for individuals or groups who violate them.

USG President Galen Foulke said those who violate the statement would be considered out of line with the Penn State community and would have to face consequences, which have not yet been decided.

The project evolved from a recommendation from Foulke to the Penn State Students' Task Force on Diversity.

The task force, composed of university administrators and students from various campus organizations, was formed last year to create a more inclusive environment on campus after several incidents that occurred in 2003.

Ryan Bennington, USG multicultural affairs director, met with Foulke on Wednesday night to discuss ideas and said the project is still in its beginning stages, though it should begin next semester and be implemented by the end of the academic year.

He added that working project titles include Student Declaration of Values or Student Statement of Values.

Bennington said the USG initiative would ideally include members from many organizations, including the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon and under-represented and multicultural groups to create a "set of purposeful values that Penn State students should practice."

"At the end of the day, we are going to hold students and student leaders and their organizations accountable to these principles," Bennington said.

Evan Jacobs, 2006 Thon overall chairman, said he has not been approached by Foulke or Bennington yet but was interested in participating in the project.

"If Thon could play a role in helping promote those values to the student body, that would be something I would be very interested in," Jacobs said.

Jacobs said he would like to see the four values practiced by Thon -- courage, honesty, wisdom and strength -- in the project.

Jacobs said any measure that brings student leaders together to talk about values important to Penn State students is a step toward improving student life.

James Ziegenfuss, co-director of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community and its allies for USG, said he would also be interested in participating in the project.

However, he said, planners would have to be careful not to create a restrictive environment with the principles they choose and how they enforce them.

However, Ziegenfuss said it is important that student leaders come together to devise a list of values to outline the expected behavior of a Penn State leader.
