When people argue against current and prospective affirmative action policies, and say that minority quotas are taking positions away from more qualified white people, do they even realize that they're implying that white people are generally better than minorities ("Death penalty, race have no correlation," Dec. 1)?
Most colleges boast a student population predominantly consisting of Caucasians. According to Wikipedia's Web site, Penn State has a minority population of 12 percent across all of its campuses.
Honestly, if race doesn't matter, then high-paying jobs and positions at colleges and universities would have to be held by a decent amount of minorities unless, of course, white people are just better at those sorts of things than the minorities who aren't getting the positions.
Such quotas are only in place to ensure that the actual opportunities available to these minorities are congruent with what they should be.
