The 32-point margin is the third worst loss in the 25-year Rene Portland era, the worst being a 98-59 whipping dealt by an unranked Michigan team on Feb. 14, 1997 -- a loss appropriately dubbed the "Valentine's Day Massacre."
Poor perimeter defense continued to malign a team that came into the game allowing a conference-worst 45.5 shooting percentage from beyond the arc, as the Lady Monarchs shot 50 percent with the long ball in the first half.
Old Dominion hit from everywhere else as well, as they opened 8-of-10 from the floor, a pace they kept up with 49 second-half points.
The effort to defend the three-ball took a significant hit early when freshman guard Mashea Williams went down with a knee injury just 33 seconds into the game. She did not return. Her absence depleted an already shallow bench as freshman forward Rashida Mark did not travel with the team due to an unknown injury, according to the Penn State Sports Network.
Junior Kamela Gissendanner rolled an ankle late in the contest. When Brianne O'Rourke fouled out with the game already out of hand, the makeshift lineup found itself without a true point guard.
With Charity Renfro kept out of the starting lineup due to poor class attendance, also according to the Sports Network, Courtney Molinaro got the nod but picked up two early fouls, putting Renfro back in the Lions' lineup.
Despite these ailments, the Lady Lions managed to tread water the best they could, as they cut an early 15-point deficit down to seven points by the half.
Old Dominion soon countered. The Lady Monarchs went on a run to open up the second half, claiming a 22-point lead with just over seven minutes left in the second half.
On a bleak evening for Penn State, there were few places to turn for optimism, but two players still put up decent numbers.
Adrienne Squire continued her excellent shooting as she single-handedly attempted to keep pace with the hot hands from Old Dominion, collecting a career-high 20 points, 15 of which came in a first half when she knocked down a quintet of trifectas. Junior captain Amanda Brown again was also a bright spot while she was on the floor, but again, she was not on the floor enough.
She found herself in foul trouble in the second half, a problem that plagued her in the first two games of the season. She contributed 15 points in the low post in just 25 minutes, remaining the only offensive threat down low.
Thinking they had seen the worst, Gissendanner then went down with the ankle injury.
O'Rourke subsequently fouled out, which moved Squire to the point and Molinaro to guard, leaving the team without a ball-handler.
Penn State dropped to 6-4 all-time in the series with Old Dominion and 0-3 on the road.
