Lions' freshman earns another Big Ten award

The measuring stick is making another appearance for the Penn State men's basketball team tonight.

As a native of Pittsburgh, freshman point guard Brianne O'Rourke is a huge Steelers fan. Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland, on the other hand, didn't even know that O'Rourke's hometown team was playing on Monday Night Football.

Adrienne Squire possesses neither a plethora of experience, loads of playing time nor an abundance of agility -- but she has done well with what she has been given.

The bowl destiny of the No. 4 Penn State football team is still a matter of speculation, but should the most likely scenarios unfold, the Nittany Lions will find themselves with either a bid to the Fiesta Bowl or the Orange Bowl on bowl selection Sunday, Dec. 4.

The Penn State men's swimming and diving team improved to 4-2 this past Tuesday, winning decisively against West Chester University at McCoy Natatorium.

As some students enter college, their instrument-playing days -- formerly days filled with sheet music and endless practices -- come to a close as these former musicians focus on other priorities.

Now that it is beginning to feel like winter, it is time to celebrate the holiday tradition of the classic tale The Nutcracker.

Tonight's Folly Fest benefit concert will aim to please music fans and put smiles on children's faces by donating proceeds from the show to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

SCIHEALTH

While walnuts, almonds, and pecans have already been found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, Penn State researchers are currently working on showing that pistachios are heart healthy, too. Pistachios are also a source of plant sterols, which help to lower cholesterol, and antioxidants, which help to reduce oxidation and inflammation.

In an effort to control the avian flu, a senior research associate at Penn State last month announced the development of a quick screen test to stop the sickness that is spreading throughout Asian bird populations.
