Letter to the Editor
Township residents won't use new library

I am a full-time, returning adult undergraduate and a State College native. Each time I have read the opinion page this semester I have been bombarded with Collegian editorials disparaging locals and Centre County in general. In Tuesday's editorial, "Halfmoon Twp. officials irresponsible for pulling promised library funds," Nov. 22, The Daily Collegian proposes a scarlet-letter payment scheme for residents of Halfmoon Township as punishment for failing to help fund Schlow Centre Region Library, which it then arrogantly claims as its own.

Halfmoon Township is home to some of Centre County's poorest residents. It is no surprise that its budget would come up short. Yet the Collegian creates barriers to information for those who arguably need access most and exacerbate problems in a community for which it clearly has no knowledge or sense of responsibility.

Moreover, Halfmoon Township is hardly "nearby." Few people in Halfmoon Township are going to make the 30-45 minute one-way drive into parking-challenged State College just to use the library. Additionally, the bookmobile, which is not affiliated with Schlow, stops at locations in or near Halfmoon Township on a biweekly basis, alleviating the need for residents there to use Schlow Library at all.

The misrepresentation of these facts is a disgrace to journalism and a disservice to the community. Centre County's communities are not the Collegian's toys to break and then discard. The arrogance regarding local residents' lives is disgusting, and the attempts to sow discord in my community are sickening. When students find out locals resent them, they will have the Collegian to thank.
