Elected as the 2006 Panhellenic Council president, Annie Larimer said she wants to expand alcohol awareness education to all sorority members and help Penn State's sororities to improve their compliance with the policies of national chapters.
Larimer, one of eight women elected to the 2006 Panhellenic Council executive board last Monday, said one of her platform goals is to see every chapter receive Training for Intervention Procedures, a program that teaches prevention and intervention in alcohol-related situations.
Opening the program up to all members, not only the presidents and social chairwomen, would provide tools to help people realize that binge and underage drinking are dangerous issues, she said.
"Education is the first part of eradicating that kind of stuff," Larimer said.
Larimer will replace Colleen Briley as Panhellenic president.
In addition to Larimer, Morgan Holland was chosen to replace Jennifer Finelli as executive vice president; Lauren Hopfan will replace Hadley Spanier as vice president of programming; Samantha Sirzyk will replace Samantha Marpe as vice president of membership; Julie Hochman will replace Becky Seasholtz as vice president of communications; Jennifer Howard will replace Allison Cradic as vice president of finance; Janessa Klahs will replace Becca Allen as associate vice president for the Interfraternity/Panhellenic Council Dance Marathon and Greek Sing; and Andrea Jacono will replace Becca Allen as associate vice president for homecoming and Greek Week.
Larimer said she hopes to help each Panhellenic chapter will abide by national policies, which would regulate recruitment, socials and scholarship policies.
"We're really going to educate them and really encourage them to comply with the policies," Larimer said. "We really want them to be on the same page."
Also, Larimer said she wants to establish an executive board retreat and promote unity among the four councils.
Marpe said the new executive members were elected by secret ballot by each of the chapters' delegates, who are the voting body of each of the 20 chapters. The new executive members will take office the last week of the semester to ensure a smooth transition, she said.
"It's really beneficial that they get a head start," Marpe said.
Marpe said some of the new executive members have experience as past chapter presidents and delegates. "I have full confidence in all their abilities," she said.
Hochman, a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, said her platform goal is to increase interaction between the Panhellenic Council with the other three greek councils, national headquarters, individual Penn State chapters and other Penn State organizations.
Hochman said she plans to invite national leaders to Panhellenic events such as Thon and Greek Sing.
Hopfan said she also wants to hold a Panhellenic-sponsored event of community service to increase the amount of philanthropic work that sororities do.
