Letter to the Editor
Spartan house lacks football atmosphere

I would like to respond to the letter written by Michigan State fan Patrick Bird regarding the rude behavior of Penn State fans in East Lansing("PSU fans disrespectful at away football games," Nov. 21). I was one of the thousands of fans who made the drive to Michigan this weekend to watch our Nittany Lions clinch the Big Ten title.

On some counts, I agree with Bird; it wasn't in particularly good taste to pass around benches that had broken during a particularly boisterous "bounce session" fueled by "Zombie Nation." Nor should Penn State fans have cursed at Michigan State fans. For that I apologize.

However, I am not apologetic regarding the "self-centered, obnoxious" chants emanating from that blue and white sliver of Spartan Stadium. Rather than voicing complaints hours after the game, Spartan fans would have been better served making some noise of their own while their team was on the field. Michigan State fans seemed to have showed up for a funeral, rather than a competitive football game, based on the level of noise they produced.

If Michigan State fans didn't care to hear our chants, 75,000 of them shouldn't have had a problem drowning out the few thousand Penn State fans, right? Was it "our house?" For three hours on Saturday, it was.
