Prior to this weekend, Penn State had dropped three consecutive games and fell below .500 for the second time this season. Head coach Michael Brinton attributed his team's recent decline to poor shot selection by the offense. Fortunately, the streaky Lady Icers offense erupted while the defense remained strong. Brinton's offensive worries were put to rest this weekend as his team scored early and often in both games. "We started taking the puck to the net," Brinton said. "We got rebounds, and we scored some ugly goals. It wasn't pretty, but it was effective." Saturday night's game started with the Lady Icers looking to snap their longest losing streak of the season. Both teams traded scoring chances early, but neither managed to grab the lead. Starting goaltender Gena Goldbaum kept Penn State in the game with some huge saves, giving confidence to her teammates. At the 10:58 mark of the first period, the Lady Icers finally struck when Ashleigh Kinder deflected a pass from Chelsea Sacks over the N.C. State goalie. Less than six minutes later, Penn State increased the lead to 2-0 when Jessica Waldron took a pass from Kinder and capitalized on the power play. Kinder would go on to score two more goals, recording her first hat trick of the season and leading her team to the victory. Junior Allison Lasser also netted two goals in the winning effort. The team continued its offensive revival in the second game yesterday morning. Waldron went on to secure another hat trick on the season as Goldbaum recorded her first shutout of the year. The team's new devotion to offense pleased the coach. "We saw we could play with teams like this," Brinton said. "We can score goals. We were really worried. We weren't scoring too many goals, but we got 13 in the past two games." Waldron's offensive output for the weekend series -- four goals and three assists -- earned her a spot in the record books as she moved past former Lady Icer Katie Clark for the third most points scored in a season by a rookie.
