Portland protest rallies not worthy of coverage

Why do the actions of 16 people warrant the attention and a color photo on the front page of The Daily Collegian ("Students rally in protest of Portland," Nov. 16)? That's 0.036 percent of the student body at Penn State. One could convince 16 college students to protest any issue conceivable.

This whole business with women's basketball coach Rene Portland is clearly a non-issue to nearly everyone at Penn State. A newspaper's job should be to report news, not to create it. This pattern of over-emphasizing the actions of certain special interests chips away at the legitimacy of the Collegian as a news source. It comes across to its readers as the Collegian advancing its own social and political agenda.
