Potter' books unlike non-secular writings
In the article, "Magic vs. religion core of 'Potter' talk," Nov. 18, Sue Justice from St. Paul's United Methodist church made a comparison of Harry Potter with The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. It's true these books fall under the same general category of fantasy, but they are vastly different. J.K. Rowling writes the Harry Potter books with a secular mind, and does not intend to convert people to witchcraft. The authors of The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis respectively, are known Christian authors, wrote their books with the specific intent of making allusions to Christianity and to portray the Christian gospel story in an entertaining way. To try and compare these books in a manner that marginalizes the intent behind the writings is not fair to the authors or the readers. There are more to some stories than what we could take at face value. Tony Bedora
