Soft-spoken forward continues to make history

Tiffany Weimer hates talking about herself, but when an athlete sets records at the pace Penn State's talented senior forward does, the limelight is hard to avoid.

With two goals in this weekend's NCAA Tournament, Weimer now has 28 for the season, giving her the Big Ten record for most goals in a season. Former Nittany Lion Christie Welsh held the previous record with 27 goals in 2001.

The record is the third to fall to Weimer this season. She also broke the Big Ten and Penn State career record for goals and scored in an NCAA record 17 straight games.

Usually timid to talk about any personal accomplishments, Weimer surprisingly admitted that this one was special.

"I like this particular accomplishment," Weimer said, knocking her hand on a table for emphasis. "Last year I came so close, and it didn't happen in the end."

Last year, Weimer fell one short of tying the record, finishing with 26 goals in 23 games. This year, it's taken her only 22 games to surpass the mark. Opposing teams have done everything possible to stop Weimer, even resorting to man-marking her for entire games.

However, Weimer has scored in all but one game this season. She now has 87 career goals, a number that has surpassed Welsh's previous record of 82 career goals.

Weimer's record-breaking goal came in the 63rd minute and gave the Lions a 3-1 lead. It was the eventual game-winner.

Senior forward Carmelina Moscato and junior defender Heather Tomko set up Weimer's goal.

"Heather played a great ball in and the defender didn't seem to be going towards it so I kind of took the initiative and went toward it and got my head on it," Weimer said.

No matter how many records Weimer breaks, she never forgets what Welsh has done for Penn State women's soccer. Welsh, who now splits time playing with the United States National Team and voluntarily coaching the Lions, has been Weimer's inspiration.

And even though Weimer now owns the records, she never fails to let everyone know she still believes Welsh to be the epitome of Penn State soccer.

"Beating another one of Christie Welsh's records is always an honor," she said. "She's made this program, and she's doing well for herself."

The only record of the three that Weimer does not have entirely to herself is the goal-scoring streak. Weimer shares the record with Portland's Christine Sinclair. Both surpassed Brandi Chastain's record of 15 consecutive games with a goal this year.

Out of all three records, Weimer had the most fun chasing the streak.

"The streak was kind of fun while it lasted," she said. "It was just something I could do every game basically. It wasn't like I had to wait a certain amount of games to do it."

Talking about her records, Weimer laughed and enjoyed the moment in the spotlight with her teammates, her voice trailing off as she reminisced the season.

"Good times," she said. "Good times."
