Two Penn State women's volleyball players have been named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced yesterday. Senior libero Kaleena Walters was tabbed a First Team Academic All-District II selection as sophomore middle hitter Melissa Walbridge earned Second Team Academic All-District II honors. Walters now advances to the national ballot to compete for a spot on the Academic All-America squad.
Walters, who has a 3.48 grade point average in Psychology, is Penn State's career digs leader and has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week a league-leading four times this year, only the fourth time in league history that a player has picked up four or more awards in one season. She has reached double-digit dig figures in 94 of her last 105 career matches, leading the team on 22 occasions this season.
Walbridge has a 3.94 grade point average in Integrative Arts and leads the Big Ten in hitting percentage (.397) while averaging 2.49 kills per game. She is fifth in the conference and second on the team in blocking with 1.39 blocks per game, leading the squad in 10 matches.
