Lions to defend home floor for Pa. Duals

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State wrestling team will try to defend its home floor and gain its first possession of the Pennsylvania State Dual Championship title with or without team co-captain Eric Bradley on Sunday.

After last weekend's scare, Penn State wrestling coach Troy Sunderland said Bradley was listed as questionable with an ankle injury this weekend, but noted that he made a lot of progress throughout the week.

"The X-rays came back negative and there's nothing broken," Bradley said.

Sophomore Chad Unger will weigh in this weekend and if Bradley is unable to go, Unger will wrestle at 184.

Junior A.J. Cummins, backup to Phil Davis at 197, also had X-rays this week for a broken clavicle, but they also came back negative.

Last year, Penn State fell to Lehigh in the dual championship 24-15. The two are favorites to meet again in the finals, but Sunderland said he wants to focus first on the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

"The main thing is we get 10 guys out there and they're competing and wrestling a full seven minutes," Sunderland said. "Whichever opponents we face, we need to be minimizing mistakes and focusing on scoring points."

The three-round tournament features four Division I teams: No. 12 Penn State, No. 8 Lehigh and unranked Lock Haven and Clarion. No. 3 Mercyhurst and No. 15 UPJ will also compete from Division II and Division III schools Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades and York College of Pennsylvania will also take part in the second annual event.

Lock Haven and Williamson are attending the tournament for the first time. Sunderland said he was happy Williamson allowed its wrestlers to take place in the even as they were a last minute addition after Bucknell opted out.

Rounds for the tournament will begin at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m.

Sunderland said the Lions will practice today and Saturday before nailing out the final rosters for the tournament. Both Tim Haas and Brad Pataky will weigh in at 125 and Unger and Bradley at 184.

UPJ coach Pat Pecora said his first ever dual match-up against the Lions will be exciting for the fans of both programs.

"A lot of our kids are friends and a lot of our fans are fans of both teams," Pecora said.

Pecora said he is particularly excited about the match-ups at the 133- and 141-pound weight classes.

Penn State senior No. 16 DeWitt Driscoll will face off against the returning Division II national champion Thad Benton at 141.

"I know Driscoll real well. He's tough as nails," Pecora said. "They have completely different styles so that should make things interesting."

Pecora said he also wants to see Penn State freshman Jake Strayer, who wrestles at the 133-pound weight class. Strayer grew up only 13 miles from Johnstown and attended wrestling camps at the UPJ campus.

"It'll be exciting to get up there and see if we can hang with the big boys for a little bit," Pecora said.
