Many men supportive of feminism's ideals
Scott Dimmich cautions us against wanting a society where people are treated as equals ("Feminist society would dissatisfy many women, Nov. 8). To him, men and women have certain roles that must be followed or everything will fall apart. Women must be walked home to protect them from the scary things that lurk in the night. Women are to radiate that "feminine sexuality" that compels men to buy them drinks and perhaps propose to them. He will promise to keep her far from those grueling jobs so that she can do what she was biologically determined to do: bear and nurture children. What woman could resist chivalry? As a feminist male, I voice my dissent to Dimmich's argument. I want a feminist society. I see a world where women are treated by the content of their character and not prescribed gender roles. I see a world where relationships are based on attraction and love rather than a dance of power. In my world, I may buy a woman a drink because I like her, not because it's my role to uphold chivalry. She may even buy me a drink because she likes me. We'll hold the door for each other. We'll take each other to dinner. I won't need to subsidize her finances because men and women will be compensated equally in the workplace. Matthew Callahan
