Information needed on issues, elections
The Daily Collegian's editorial opinion "Student voter turn-out shows political apathy, ignorance of local issues," Nov. 9, provides an ample opportunity to discuss several steps the Collegian could have taken to improve Tuesday's election coverage. The editorial ended in part with "...nothing will ever change until students start researching candidates ..." However, unlike several other college newspapers, the Collegian, a primary source of local information for students, provided very little information to readers about the candidates up for election, what their views are and what issues were at stake concerning students. The opinion pages for which the Editorial Board could have used before the election were amazingly silent. Before the editorial board condemns its readers for their apparent ignorance of local issues and apathy for the election, they should question whether they fulfilled their responsibility to provide the information regarding the candidates and issues that in their words are "much more likely to affect the lives of constituents" and readers of this newspaper.
