Students celebrate 100 days until Thon

For The Collegian

Members of the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon stood behind the Coldstone Creamery counter yesterday scooping out cake batter and sweet cream creations for customers.

The event, which featured Thon overalls and hospitality captains as guest Coldstone scoopers, was held as part of the celebration of 100 days until Thon.

The ice creamery donated 50 percent of the purchase costs to Thon and awarded spirit points to the various organizations that are working together to spread public awareness and raise money for the event.

"We are really getting the word out and trying to create a fun, positive environment," Courtnee Spino (junior-psychology and crime, law and justice) said.

Students gathered at various locations across campus to raise money and support for Thon.

"The goal of the day is to spread awareness of Thon and to get the student body excited for this year's dance marathon," Public Relations Chair Jaci Christopher said.

The marketing committee sold shirts, bracelets and gold ribbons at tables in the HUB-Robeson Center to raise money to benefit The Four Diamonds Fund and conquering childhood cancer.

"Walking over here, almost every person I saw was wearing a Thon shirt," Josie Mullen (junior-marketing) said. "It has been very successful."

The hospitality committee sold candy bags at Coldstone Creamery, 321 E. Beaver Ave., the dining commons, Student Book Store, 330 E. College Ave., and the HUB to raise money and awareness of Thon.

"We are hoping that by having this wide range of activities that we can get as many different people involved as possible," said Thon Special Event Chair David Brownstein.

"Thon is a great event that goes on at Penn State's campus," he said.

The Morale Committee contributed to the day's events by hosting a line dance in front of Old Main.

"Everyone was really into it and some people in the crowd who already knew the dance even started to participate," Mullen said.

Thon participants also spread awareness by handing out Thon stickers across campus.

"We have all different committees going out to spread the awareness of Thon and helping to raise money," Hospitality Captain Emily Greenburg said. "Overall, I think it is a really amazing day."

Theme dinners were also scheduled last night in Findlay, Waring, Pollock and Redifer dining commons to celebrate the day's activities.

"This really is one of the best days because it puts into perspective how close Thon really is," Communications Captain Jennifer Freeman said. "It also gets everyone really excited to help support Thon," she added.
