Don't get caught committing 'fashion faux pas'
'Suit' yourself

Collegian Staff Writer

It is about the time of year when students are busy with interviews for internships, co-ops and real jobs, so it is important for men to dress their best.

It is also the time when Joshua Juda, an employee at Jack Harper's Young Men's Shop, 114 W. College Ave., begins to see some serious fashion faux pas all around the town.By just taking a few notes, men can create that "great first impression" look.

"There are some things that you see again and again," Juda said.

Start with the jacket. The suit's shoulders should line up with your own shoulders, and you should avoiding the massive shoulder-pad look, Juda said. The jacket should fit casually, not too tight, but not too loose.

The buttons are where the largest problems occur, he added.

"In a three-button or two-button suit, the bottom button should always be left undone," Juda said. " I don't know why it is there, but you just never button it."

Sleeve length is also important, said Anne Holmes, a tailor at Anne's Maddness, 1234 Park Hills Ave.

"Tailors usually suggest that the sleeve fall halfway between the tip of the thumb and the wrist," she said.

Holmes said almost any suit could be tailored to fit perfectly, so Goodwill is not completely off limits. For the pants, Holmes said there are endless possibilities.

"It is really up to your own taste as to how you want your pants to fit," she said.

Juda said pants should always sit on your hips or around your waist, and the leg should cover your shoelaces, hitting the tops of your soles. As for pant hemlines, Juda said pleated pants should generally be cuffed, while non-pleated pants should have a straight hem. Holmes said that depends on your personal style.

"In my opinion, it is usually the woman in the man's life that decides a cuff or not," she said.

Shoes can also be a problem, and Gloria Licata, an associate in men's fashion at the Nittany Mall's Kaufmann's department store, said a square toe is really in fashion right now.

"Usually, a toe cap or a wing tip is nice, but not always needed," she said.

Juda added that it is a good idea to have your belt match your shoes.

"And make sure your shoes are shiny; get some shoe polish," he said. "A black or burgundy works out well."

Juda said men should always wear nice dress socks.

"Never wear white athletic socks," he said, adding it is one of the worst fashion crimes to commit.

The tie question is all up to personal style, but Juda said men should shy away from novelty ties, like Loony Toons ties.

Licata said plain white or light-blue shirts are good for interviews, as are regular ties.

"Staying conservative is always the best idea," she said.
