NEWS

The judge assigned to the case of a local tanning salon owner accused of spying on customers will not decide on a motion to suppress evidence for about two weeks, until he can review briefs filed by attorneys for both sides.

Penn State's 2005 university-wide minority enrollment figures have increased, while total enrollment numbers have decreased for the whole university and at University Park.

Last fall, each Duke University freshman was welcomed with a free iPod.

Every semester, women's studies classes put together a project to present in the HUB Alumni Hall, aiming to shed light on different feminist issues.

While Penn State has seen cuts in state appropriations five times in the last four years, Pennsylvania's private and independent college campuses may benefit from a $250 million state grant that has approval from the state House and is awaiting a vote in the Senate.

Police in the Centre region set up a sobriety checkpoint Friday as part of a wider Pennsylvania State Police initiative to deter drunken driving, which resulted in 11 arrests and 22 citations -- about the average for the weekend, police said.

Bill Welch will take office for the fourth time as mayor of State College after being re-elected by a large majority in municipal elections last night.

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate voted unanimously last night that acts of discrimination at the university should not be tolerated, and if such acts are conducted by staff or faculty, it should lead to their immediate termination from the university.

Penn State indefinitely suspended its study abroad programs to Kenya this week.

Although voter turnout yesterday in the HUB-Robeson Center, the location where most students vote, reached 110, the second highest it has been in the last four midterm elections, it is still low when compared with the about 5,000 registered voters in the HUB precincts.

Democrats swept State College Borough Municipal Elections yesterday in a race where voters picked the party's three candidates for council over three Republicans, according to nearly totaled results on the Centre County Web site.

SPORTS

Being rudely awaken from a good night's sleep is never pleasant. But when the alarm sounds during the perfect dream, it takes much more than a cup of coffee to get going.

After a tough weekend of being beat up by the University of Rhode Island, the Penn State ACHA Division I Icers can now breathe a weary sigh of relief.

Senior defender Natalie Jacobs hurried back to embrace her teammates following netting her penalty kick yesterday.

With the arrival of tremendous recruiting classes for nearly every fall sport, Penn State's teams are in a very unusual situation -- freshmen are not only making a difference, but some are standing out as stars.
