"We played really good," senior Natalie Berrena said. "It was just unfortunate how it ended."
Michigan (15-7, 3-3) took advantage of its first two penalty corners, going up 2-0 in the first half and holding the lead from then on out.
"Michigan played very well," senior Molly Schriver said. "The corners were two great shots and it was just unlucky that they went in."
Penn State's shots on goal continued to dazzle throughout the season but for the first time this year the Lions weren't able to walk off the field with a win, despite having more shots on goal.
Michigan had the luck with the penalty corners and for the first time all season, Penn State had no luck despite where they were shooting from on the field.
In the first half, junior midfielder Annelise Legel powered her way into the center of the circle, but Michigan knocked the ball out of the way before she could convert. Soon after that, Bekah Hostetler shot wide right from a pass from junior Shaun Banta. Berrena shot another wide right ball to end the half with the Lions trailing by two.
"We had a hard time finishing in the circle," Berrena said. "We had a lot of chances and a bunch of shots went wide."
The team's game plan changed to a more aggressive one in the second half as the Lions regained their old form of harassing the opposing goalie like they have all season.
Determination was what won them over as the Lions were held scoreless in the first half and but came up big in the waning minutes of the game when forward Shaun Banta broke the curse of the wide rights and knocked in her 16th goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Akstin kept her team in the game with a huge save when she broke up a breakaway by Michigan's Mary Fox.
"We are just trying to get better," Schriver said. "It's nothing specific and we've been playing our best games."
