Profusion of clothes not necessarily bad

There seem to have been a few oversights in Meredith Jones' column on fashion ("Shopping habits reveal need for lifestyle change," Nov. 3): An intended audience and a point.

First, let's move past the gross stereotype-laden assumption that all women would rather die than wear last year's hottest color according to Abercrombie & Fitch. Now, where on Penn State's campus are these women?

Hiding among the masses who sport flip-flops and their boyfriends' oversized sweats? I don't see most women here following many fashion trends, unless wearing slippers from Target to class is Vogue's hot new idea. Regardless of what women are or aren't wearing, I don't understand this declared need for a lifestyle change. These alleged spendthrifts are buying clothes, not suffering a drug addiction.

An abundance of clothes says nothing of any woman's priorities. One can have several outfit options and still study, have good relationships, and even be intelligent, despite our collective, implied need to put our self-worth on our sleeves. So what if I have the same pair of shoes in different colors? Call it a hobby. Call it an investment. But who cares why women may spend money on clothes. It's their choice.
